Meta Appoints ChatGPT Co-Founder Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist of Its AI Labs

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has appointed Shengjia Zhao, the co-creator of ChatGPT, as the chief scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s most ambitious AI research initiative to date.

Zhao, who previously worked at OpenAI, played a key role in advancing generative AI technologies and large language models. Her move to Meta underscores the tech giant’s increasing focus on building artificial general intelligence (AGI) and maintaining leadership in next-generation AI systems.

“She is one of the most innovative and respected minds in the field,” Zuckerberg said Friday, announcing her appointment. “Zhao will lead our efforts to push the boundaries of superintelligence in a safe and open way.”

Zhao replaces Meta’s longtime AI chief scientist, Yann LeCun, who will remain with the company in a senior advisory and research role. Meta executives said Zhao’s leadership will accelerate work in areas such as alignment, safety, and scalability of foundation models.

Zhao’s transition comes amid a broader reshuffling in the AI world. Her exit from OpenAI follows a string of high-profile departures at the company, which has faced increasing scrutiny over transparency, research openness, and governance.

Meta said Zhao will be tasked with spearheading Superintelligence Labs’ efforts to make AGI research more accessible, responsible, and globally impactful.
